WHO ARE WE?

[wavelength] is a demand for something more,

and a declaration that New Orleans has that something.

We are a collective of artists, musicians, poets, activists, dancers, scientists, engineers, and empaths seeking more from a cappella than a score or a concert. We want a movement.

We are a movement.

Within months of our conception, we founded [surround sound], a concert series that brings together performers and artists from the city of New Orleans (students included) to not only bridge communities and link networks, but provide exposure for upcoming performers.

[surround sound] is just one of the ways we work to serve a city that gives us so much. We also aim to incorporate community service in our brand, whether that’s volunteering as a group at New Orleans’s Jazz & Heritage Fest, or individually tutoring for organizations like Roots of Music.

When we choose and arrange our music, we do so with the intent of staying true to the musical heart of New Orleans. Since we’re dedicated to using music as a means of connection and communication, that often means some of us begin to sing music we didn’t always grow up hearing. To do so, we keep our ears to the ground beneath us—learning to speak, with respect and not exploitation, in tongues not always ours, but always directed towards deeper understanding of each other and the world around us.

[wavelength] is more than an a cappella group. We aim to be a higher realization of an art form--

holding that art form to higher standards (inclusion, representation, louder love), and mobilizing the art to exemplify said standards.

In [wavelength], we think outside of the paradigm, hence the brackets—we are our own box. In our box, we are diverse, emotionally eloquent, and inspired by our city. We don’t just sing something, we sing for something, always, and that something is that we may have different stories, skin colors, sexualities, religions, and realities, but we all speak music, and we plan to use our common language to spread the spirit of New Orleans: unbridled love.

So, if you, too, think that a cappella can be more, and art can do more, we invite you:

get on our [wavelength].
